I used to never think much about end zone celebrations. Maybe I’m just getting old. Could also be that I understand football better since moving to southern Lousiana. Whatever the case, they’re starting to get on my nerves.
Don’t they realize that those touchdowns are only made possible when other people make solid blocks, someone throws a good pass, someone else runs a crisp route, and a defender happens to not figure it out in time? Does it really warrant a physical celebration that says “Yeahhhhhhh!!!! Look at me!!! Look at me!!!! I did it!!!! I did it!!!!”
Like I said, it never used to bother me. It was just entertaining. And sometimes they were funny. But I think the final straw came this past weekend.
Reggie Bush is a great running back. In fact, he may be the second coming of Barry Sanders. Or better. But it just irks me seeing him on tv dancing in the end zone. When the Saints scored, they were still down! Sure, it was a brilliant run and cause for excitement, but still…
I love that old quote by legendary football coach Paul Brown: “When you get to the end zone, act like you’ve been there before.”
